I didn’t need to be told twice. With the wave of the crowd, I busted out of the door into the bright sunlight. The sounds of Squirrely Man’s screams pierced the panicked fleeing screams and squealing tires.
I jumped in my car, forcing it to start, and slammed my foot on the pedal to move it into intense accelerated rates well past the law’s legal limits. Where should I go?
I swung by the fairgrounds but the carnival was gone, along with any chance of speaking with Roma.
With no other immediate options, I headed home. My heart and thoughts raced with uncertainties. I considered telling my parents, Rosetta, or Donnie. They hadn’t seemed supportive or believing, which was why I hadn’t told them where I was going in the first place, though. Mr. Sanchez was a Prince of Hell? It seemed surreal, but he’d killed with all of us as witnesses. No, not witnesses. He was proving a point. He had power, maybe dark magic. Whatever it was, it was beyond anything I could completely fathom. Really, I didn’t have a choice now. I understood he controlled the others and me. Our ultimatum was to die a gruesome, painful death, and go to Hell. That wasn’t the worst part either. He threatened our families and friends, too.
I detested working but I didn’t want my family to die for my sins. I also couldn’t push sloth on them. What choice did I have? I didn’t have an alternative to working. Mr. Sanchez made that much clear in more ways than one.
I decided to go to my room, play video games, while I figured out more—if I could figure out a plan.
Hoping I wouldn’t run into anyone, I darted up the steps. Various opened acceptance letters from universities were spread across my dresser. They hadn’t been there when I left. My parents had been bugging me to go to college for years. It was the answer I needed. I flipped through the small pile and chose the one with the farthest distance from our winery.
The next few days were a blur of activity. I’d announced to my family and friends that I was going to college in New York. Despite being only accepted if I started during the summer, I told them I needed to leave immediately, that I wanted to drive cross county and visit some sights along the way. My parents voiced concern, worried since I would travel alone for a lengthy time, my first long road trip. In the end, and after I promised they could come visit once I was settled, I convinced them. The only form of sloth I had pushed was playing video games with Donnie and making him skip school. I felt bad about deceiving him and worse because I was going to miss him. Through a teary-eyed departure, I said my goodbyes.
I spent two months on the road, racking up the credit card my parents gave me with hotel stays, food, and gas. The trip was slow and tedious, just as I had planned.
